In my experience as a woman who has lived through many “do this’ and do that’s,” part of being comfortable with me was feeling free enough to change a part of myself through a tattoo. It’s interesting how many of us have become separated from our own selves; we look at certain parts of our bodies as if they were foreign objects, only exploring them in depth if there is a problem. A tattoo will give you a greater appreciation for the part of the body it is placed upon as well as a reverence for what it takes to get through the experience. I knew when I met Doz that whatever vision was in my head for a tattoo he would actualize. As an artist he understands and respects a persons’ personal preference. I never felt as if he was projecting his own opinion or judgment onto me as I went through the process of design work and implementation. The random e-mails I would send…the stencil idea changes…my hesitation about the placement and pain…all of it was met with understanding. I never would have embarked upon this type of project with someone I didn’t feel completely comfortable with. You’ve got to resonate with the tattoo artist. You may think passive should work for this business but (and take if from the queen of passive) it doesn’t. Doz leads with strength—this is a very good thing. It may be due to his Detroit background, his martial arts training or his history as a successful artist, but his confidence is necessary and affirming if you are the least bit nervous about getting some ink. All thoughts of a tattoo being a silly idea were diffused as I spent more time in the shop seeing the work he had done on other people. He gently gave me guidance; letting me be the decision maker stylistically but my surrendering at the end and trusting his vision is what ultimately made my tattoo a masterpiece.
I love art. Most of my
personal pieces have been carefully thought out before I made a
financial commitment. I can honestly say this is one of the
most beautiful investments I have made…the intricate design work
and color combinations are uniquely mine. It’s a perfect
piece of permanence and I look forward to
walking around with it the rest of my life. |
